What is precision agriculture?

Precision means accuracy or exactness while agriculture implies the art and science of farming.

Thus precision agriculture as a whole stands towards the art and science of farming making maximum utilization of optimum resources by making accurate land predictions.

It is also known as satellite agriculture, as it needs both farmings in addition to having a hold on site-specific management of crops.

Inputs such as water, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides are given according to field requirements to the targeted areas thus making the least possible use of resources.

Why precision agriculture?

Different parts of the field are different. The variation arises in soil, slope, light etc., thus we, in precision agriculture, take account of these variations and adopt operations accordingly. Techniques related to precision agriculture

Various techniques related to precision agriculture are as follows

  • Remote sensing – refers to the use of satellites in order to gather information about anything without making physical touch.

  • Crop scouting – it is the process used to detect the level of pest infestations and take the steps accordingly to prevent the crops from getting damaged.

  • Variable-rate technology – it allows the application of inputs such as water, fertilizer, lime, etc. at different rates according to zone requirement preventing the blanket application of resources.

  • Geographic information system – it is a sort of database having geographic data along with software tools facilitating management and visualization of the data.

  • Global positioning system – U.S. based system used for positioning, navigation, and timing commonly called PNT.

  • Yield monitoring and mapping – it monitors the crop yield on a field to field or load to load basis and gives the idea of best resource utilization.

Requirements for precision agriculture

It relies on new technology like GPS, IT, Satellite imagery, control systems, sensors, robotics, drones, autonomous vehicles, sensors, automated hardware, telematics, and software along with basics like tractors, combines, sprayers, diggers, planters, etc.

For instance sensors such as soil sensors (provides us with information of soil texture, soil organic matter, soil moisture, soil pH, nutrient status of soil, soil compaction, etc.) plant sensors (providing information of biomass, level of nutrient deficiency, weed population, water stress, etc.) are used.

How does it work?

Satellites and robotic drones help in providing the images of individual plants, the information obtained is accompanied by sensors and other data helps in implementing correct immediate and future plans. The area requiring a particular resource is met by that resource rather than applying it to the whole field thus saving your money, resource, and time.

Limitations to precision agriculture

  • For a farmer setting up the necessary setup may be difficult.

  • Keeping an eye on every corner on regular basis particularly for large lands is lethargic.

  • Internet issues may pose a problem.

  • Dependent on weather conditions.

  • Heavy energy requirements.

  • In the case of technology downtime losses can be faced.

  • Increases unemployment

  • Weather dependent

Thus, there is a need to look after these issues, get them resolved, and make this very effective means of farming more convenient.
